Community Education

Family Abuse Services places special emphasis on prevention through community education and awareness programs designed to reach a diverse group of people of all ages. While the community education department has always paid careful attention to reaching the school systems, our vision includes focus on workplace violence, Latina community education, elder abuse and many civic, church and professional groups. School outreach is especially empowered by the yearly successful presentation of puppet shows in conjunction with the Alamance County Service League to every 3rd grade class in Alamance County. Our work with the local schools has spanned over two decades of investment in education of youth on the realities of healthy relating. Focus includes the basics of appropriate vs.
inappropriate scenarios, resources for children in abusive situations,
dating dynamics, the signs of abuse, warning signs of potentially
abusive relationships and many other areas of vital importance in the
work of prevention and education.

One of the newest additions to our outreach and awareness programs
has come through collaboration with Elon University and local
domestic violence task force members in an effort widely acclaimed
and recognized as the MVP, Mentors In Violence Prevention, Program
developed by Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of
Sport in Society. The MVP program brings students in touch with deep
issues of bystander empathy and involvement in initiatives to promote
healthy relationships on many levels. We are excited and appreciate
the opportunity to utilize this tremendous program in conjunction
with Elon University.

Community education continues to grow, deepening the outreach to community and dedicating considerable time to establishing thorough publications and informative brochures for domestic violence advocates, survivors and victims seeking every opportunity to erase domestic violence and build peace. Volunteer Program…

Family Abuse Services depends on the rich network of local volunteers and especially appreciates a collaborative partnership with Elon’s Kernodle Center for Service Learning to supplement our growing needs. Our agency requires a minimum of general orientation and background check with additional training for those interested in staffing our crisis line and shelter.
